Beautiful, Lindsay.

And don't you think the old handwritten recipe books are the best? A record of society at the time - let alone the handwriting which sings its own little melody.

Ah yes Prue, the loops of writing are a song! And sometimes scratchy, sometimes soft and fluid. We all have our own song.

Love this Lindsay.. i treasure my hard cover budget book that mum hand wrote all my favourite recipes growing up.. and gave me when I was first married..pages stiff from melted butter. My kids who printed in the margins..

Every recipe, beautiful penmanship, brings me back to me as a teen in mums kitchen

Pages stiff with melted butter - the best sign. What a treasure. xo

What a lovely story.

I have a blue 3 x 5 recipe box that I bought in 1966 to put recipes in. I was ten and Mum and Dad encouraged me to cook and bake, also teaching me some of their favourite recipes (not written down) that I wrote down on the lined cards and filed away. I also have an old coil bound workbook that I didn't use in Grade 12 that I took with me when I married in 1974 that I still have (quite stained from years of use) that I am reluctantly turning into PDF files so that I can share with friends and family. I think that I will copy your lentil soup recipe onto one of the cards in my little blue box and give it a try. Thanks for sharing it with us as well as the research you found on your home.

Thanks to Prue for sharing you in her Knots, and I'm a fellow Canadian in Windsor, ON across from Detroit, MI. I was out to Halifax to visit my daughter and her family in the summer of 2023 and just loved it. I hope to be able to come back and visit a childhood friend and his wife again but will have to plan a trip to England to visit my daughter and family as they have moved to Cornwall England!

P.S. - I love using pencils for notes, recipes, lists etc. I have a sharpener mounted under a shelf in my little utility room ;)

Cheers!
